The Fraud Patterns Every Sugar Buyer Should Recognize
The ICUMSA 45 market is saturated with fraudulent offers. Here is how to tell a real transaction from an engineered one — and how Aerisus protects its counterparties.
Overview
An honest page about a dishonest corner of the market
Search for ICUMSA 45 sugar and most of what you find is not sugar. It is a circulating ecosystem of templated offers, fake allocations, and procedures engineered to extract fees before anything verifiable exists. Established trading houses publish fraud warnings about impersonators for a reason.
Aerisus operates in this market every day, and we would rather educate counterparties than compete with noise. The patterns below account for the overwhelming majority of sugar-trade fraud. None of them survive contact with a disciplined documentary process.
Our own commitment: Aerisus communicates only from @aerisus.com addresses. We never request advance fees, and every transaction we structure runs through banks, inspection agencies, and contracts you can independently verify.
Capabilities
The patterns
Advance-Fee Procedures
Any procedure requiring payment before contract and banking instrument exist — "allocation fees", "registration", "tabletop meeting costs" — is the fraud itself. Legitimate trade pays against documents, never before them.
Instrument Fiction
"MT799 payment", leased SBLCs, "monetized" instruments. These misuse real message names to imply money movement where none occurs. MT799 is an advisory message; leased standby instruments are not a recognized path to buying sugar.
Impossible Offers
Prices far below the ICE No. 5 white benchmark, unlimited monthly volumes, and immediate availability — from sellers with no traceable mill relationship. Real allocations are finite and priced against published benchmarks.
Broker Daisy-Chains
Offers that arrive through four intermediaries, none of whom can name the principal. Every added link is someone who cannot verify anything and needs the deal to close blind.
Impersonation
Fraudsters clone the names, documents, and even email domains of real refineries and trading houses. Verify every counterparty through independent channels — registry records, verified domains, direct phone lines — not through documents they provided.
Inspection Avoidance
Pressure to skip SGS/BV/Intertek inspection, accept a seller-chosen inspector you cannot verify, or pay against scanned documents alone. Independent inspection is non-negotiable in legitimate trade.
Outcomes
The verification checklist
- Verify corporate registration and beneficial ownership through official registries
- Confirm the seller's mill or refinery relationship independently — not via their own paperwork
- Insist on ICC-framework instruments through named, verifiable banks
- Require independent inspection with your right to appoint or witness
- Screen counterparties, vessels, and banks against sanctions lists
- Walk away from any procedure that inverts the pay-against-documents principle
